21 January 2000. Tunis, Tunisia.
As your coffin is being carried into the cathedral, red carnations were thrown while people cheered and chanted your name. "Bettino! Bettino! Bettino!" Sigh... the last time you heard this was way back in the 80s. And the last time you had attracted a crowd this huge, they were throwing coins at you. Amazing how fickle some people can be, isn't it?
Well, as they always say: All things must eventually come to an end. And so, congratulations on having completed this game. You have managed to steer clear from those prison bars and have ended your final chapter in the comforts of your Tunisian home. Doesn't really matter where you're buried, does it? What's important is that those magistrates in Italy are now still fuming over the fact that you had escaped punishment via your self-imposed exile. And to think, they had actually just issued more accusations a few days ago.
Well, at least now they have more charges to look forward to, because about a week ago, you had sent a 30-page memo to your brother-in-law, the former Milan mayor Paolo Pilliltteri (also convicted of corruption charges), charging that all the parties had accepted illegal contributions.
Sigh. Maybe it really seems like you have indeed been made a scapegoat by your political enemies. But it doesn't really matter to you now, does it Bettino?
THE END
