February 1993, Milan
You are currently under pressure to step down from the party. But in doing so, your political career would be over. A fellow Socialist senator, Gino Giugni has even hinted to you that if you keep stalling, the PSI “would be left with a secretary (poor Amato), and no party”.
A sense of crisis now looms over your own party. The television crew recently filmed some policemen searching your headquarters in Rome on an order from the Milan magistrates (it has to be Di Pietro!). And you’ve just received your fourth notice that you are under investigation in connection with another piece of alleged corruption in Milan. Ah… more toilet paper…
Oscar
At your party’s meeting on Monday, your lieutenant Amato didn’t turn up, with the full support from the President, Oscar Luigi Scalfaro. Furthermore, three Socialist ministers, including your former deputy and current justice minister Claudio Martelli. He said that neither he nor his followers in the party would attend any further meetings under your leadership. This is mutiny!
What would be your best option now?
What else is there to be done? After all, I have even lost the support of my own party. I'm on my own. Might as well slip away while I can and hope that I don't get caught. | This is preposterous! These men should be punished for their disloyalty! After all that I have done for them! I'll fight fire with fire! First thing on my list - get rid of Martelli... |
